Synsets provide brief definitions and examples of use in order to assist the understanding of words which assert similar ideas without altering the meaning. According to Princeton “Synsets are interlinked by means of conceptual-semantic and lexical relations.”A synset can also be defined as a set of words containing the same speech components that have the possibility to be interchanged in a certain context. Synsets are sets of synonyms which are semantically comparable to each other and are able to be alternated. The database contains 155 327 words organised in 175 979 synsets in more than 200 languages in which adjectives, nouns, adverbs and verbs (although avoids determiners and prepositions) are coordinated into synonym sets respecting different concepts. Wordnet is the name given to lexical databases which are based on Princeton which was the first WordNet created in the 1980’s. ![]()
